The Melissa virus debuted on March 26, 1999, changing the digital landscape forever as one of the fastest-spreading email worms in history. Created by programmer David L. Smith, who named the virus after an adult dancer in Florida, it demonstrated the devastating potential of combining simple macro code with clever social engineering. Rather than hacking complex firewalls, Melissa exploited human trust to trick users into spreading the virus themselves.
The attack began when Smith uploaded an infected Microsoft Word document to an online newsgroup, claiming it contained login credentials for subscription websites. When an unsuspecting user downloaded and opened the file, an embedded Visual Basic macro executed automatically, modifying Microsoft Word’s security settings to infect future documents.
How the Virus Spread
Once active on a computer, Melissa used the victim’s local mail client to propagate rapidly across the internet:
- Social Engineering: The virus sent an email from the victim’s account with the subject line “Important Message From [Sender Name]” and a friendly message reading, “Here is that document you asked for … don’t show anyone else ;-)”.

The sheer strain forced organizations like Microsoft, Intel, and the U.S. Marine Corps to temporarily shut down their internal email systems to stop the propagation.
- Financial and Operational Damage: The FBI estimated that the outbreak caused over $80 million in damages from cleanup, lost productivity, and network downtime.
- Law Enforcement Response: Authorities tracked Smith down within days through digital forensic traces. He eventually pleaded guilty, serving 20 months in federal prison and paying a $5,000 fine.
